Description
In Scottish mythology, a kelpie is a water spirit which lives in the Scottish lochs, and is often seen in the form of a horse. The kelpie, according to legend, has the power to take on human form, but seaweed in the hair, or feet that are more like hooves often give it away. There are many legends surrounding the kelpie, which most often appears as a man who falls in love with a beautiful young maiden.
The Kelpies sculptures, each 30 meters (98.43 feet) high and the tallest equine sculptures in the world, are located next to the Forth and Clyde Canal in The Helix, a park area with miles of cycling and walking trails. Scottish Clydesdale horses were the inspiration for Scottish sculptor Andy Scott for the creation of this beautiful work of art which celebrates the horse's role as a canal tow horse as well as its role in Scotland's agriculture and industry.
